I come from a family of five. My parents both graduated from UGA 2000/2001, and my sister was lucky enough to follow in their footsteps. She is currently a sophomore at UGA. My baby sister will probably be president someday... we have to keep an eye on her. Family is so important to me. It's truly who I spend the most of my time with.
My school gave me many opportunities to play a variety of varsity sports. I was thankful to be on a state winning football championship team. I also played years with a soccer team that struggled to win a game. Overall, the lesson learned is that winning isn't everything. I have found that supporting my team and becoming a leader on and off the field matters the most.
Each year our church in Milledgeville has a week for student's 6th grade and up to participate in working in our community and serving those that need us. The mission is called River of Life. Our main objective is to build ramps for families that need them. I have helped with around 20 ramps in Milledgeville. I love this mission and look forward to it each summer.
This past summer I was invited by my local Rotary Group to participate in a 3-night event at the Coastal College of Georgia called the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy. I met so many wonderful people and learned a ton about how to be a better leader and serve others. It was an unforgettable experience. This past August, the local Rotary Group had me come and speak and share the experience with them. It was a nice time to thank them for the opportunity.
It just doesn't take too much to make a difference. Our town has a large percentage of students coming from extreme poverty. This school year I began the first two weeks collecting items for local children that need school supplies. To say that it was successful is an understatement. I was very thankful the community and school embraced this school supply drive to assist in providing for the kids.
Here is a picture of my dad, Andrew Hitchcock (UGA Class of 2000 BSFR) and my grandfather, Franklin Hitchcock (UGA Class of 1963 BSFR, UGA Law Class of 1965 ). We work together on a small family farm on the weekends, but they both inspire me with their work ethic and dedication to preserving nature and long-term timber management. Although my grandfather also got his law degree at UGA and practices law for a living... he still shows me the importance of taking care of the land.
